Save Your Sorrow with Kidsmoke - An Interview

 ***** Interview with Kidsmoke *****
Q1. Q. When did Kidsmoke start? Tell us about the history...

LW: We got together in 2013, after a previous band that James and I were in disbanded. One day, out of the blue James sent me a few demos he’d been working on to listen to. I wrote some vocal melodies and lyrics for them and sent them back, then we both decided to start something up again.

Q2.Q: Who are your influences?
LW: The Smiths / The Beatles
JS: The Beach Boys / Elliott Smith / Super Furry Animals
SB: The Beatles / The Staves
AT: Real Estate / Fleet Foxes

Q3.Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
We’ll give you one per member….

LW: The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
JS: Radiohead - OK Computer
SB: The Beatles - Revolver
AT: Steely Dan - Aja

Q4.Q. How do you feel playing live?
LW: We try to make our shows as energetic as we can. We want the audience to see that our songs mean something to us, and not look like we’re just going through the motions. I think it’s important to try and convey the emotions in the songs and to try to connect with people that way.

Q5.Q. How do you describe Kidsmoke sounds?
LW: I always find it tough to answer this question. I think our influences shine through in our music quite a bit; bands like The Smiths and Real Estate but also I think you can hear that we listen to a lot of 60’s bands like The Beatles and Beach Boys too. A radio DJ likened us to a modern day version of The Go-Betweens the other day and I thought that was pretty accurate.

Q6.Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
LW: Our last few recordings have been at Orange Sound Recording Studios, Penmaenmawr with Russ Hayes. We absolutely love recording with Russ, he’s such a talented musician and producer and seems to get the best out of us. We record in a very relaxed way, no pressure to force the songs to sound a certain way, as we trust each others judgements and prefer to let things flow in a open and collaborative way.

Q7:Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
LW: Spinning Coin / Her's
JS: Snail Mail
SB: Surf Rock is Dead
AT: Night Moves

Q8:Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
LW: We’ve only ever done one cover in this band and that was 'Swim and Sleep ’ by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, so I’ll say them as we’re all big fans.

Q9.Q: What are your plans for the future?
We have an EP titled ‘Save Your Sorrow’ out in June (9), so we plan on spending the rest of the year promoting it. Next year we hope to record and release our debut album.

Q10.Q: Any parting words?
Yes.
