Seen It Before with Headclouds - An Interview

***** Interview with Headclouds *****

Q. When did Headclouds start? Tell us about the history...
Headclouds are Steven Gordon (vocals/guitar), Al Charnley (lead guitar), Nick Hodgson (bass), Cole Gilroy (drums) and Jonny Lathbury (keys). We formed in Newcastle at the start of the year. 4 of the 5 current members played in a band called High Tide 15:47 up until the end of last year. We decided we wanted to keep making music, so we came up with a new name and brought in Jonny as a keyboardist.

Q: Who are your influences?
We love a lot of 90s stuff, Teenage Fanclub, Pavement, Radiohead. We're big fans of a lot of modern stuff too, people like Kurt Vile and Mac DeMarco are cool. There's also an 80s band from Newcastle called Prefab Sprout who we love, if you've never heard them then you need to listen to their album, Steve McQueen.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
My personal top five would probably be:

Boxer by The National,
Doolittle by The Pixies,
Souvlaki by Slowdive,
Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub
and The Stone Roses debut album.

If I was to choose on behalf of the band I'd probably keep Slowdive and Teenage Fanclub. I know we all love Radiohead, maybe In Rainbows is the one we bond over most, it's a three-way fight between that, Kid A and OK Computer. Two other records we mutually love would also be Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and, bizarrely, Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We consider ourselves to be more of a live band so it's always great to get out and play. We're really looking forward to going on tour.

Q. How do you describe Headclouds' sound? It's hard to describe your own band’s music, especially when you tell a taxi driver you’re in a band! We've been described as dreamy and jangly, one article called us 'sunshine pop slackers', which I quite liked. I want to think we've got a bit more grit about us too though, not afraid to turn it up a little.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We've been recording at Blank Studios in Newcastle with Chris McManus. He's done great work with bands we love from our region like A Festival, A Parade, Eat Fast and James Leonard Hewitson (all worth checking out) so we thought we'd give him a bash. He's great to work with, he lets us experiment but isn't afraid to say when something's not right too.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
The three I mentioned previously are great. There's a lot of bands from our region at the minute that are well worth a listen. The likes of Callum Pitt, Penguin and Transfigure are really making a name for themselves. I like a lot of the noisy, more underground stuff coming out too - Okay Champ, Luxury and Swine Tax come to mind. We share a practice space with two pretty cool bands in Ghost Signals and Seeing Hands... I could go on for hours about the music around our neck of the woods in all honesty. We’ve got a pretty groovy thing going on.

Q: Which band would you love to do a cover version of?
If we had to pick a band, I think we'd mutually agree on a cover of a Teenage Fanclub song. Probably Everything Flows or The Concept.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Our next single 'Seen It Before', will be released at the end of this month. We also set off on a UK tour very soon, stopping in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow. We can't wait. We'll be releasing our debut EP 'Pure Honey' early next year too. Then hopefully in the future we'll play headline sets at Glastonbury, Primavera and the 2019 edition of Woodstock that I just made up.

Q: Any parting words?
Watch them roads... And go listen to our music.
