Sanctuary+ with Silent Forum - An Interview

Diretamente de Cardiff, o quinteto Silent Forum, vem intensificar a onda densa e crua do cenário pós punk do globo.

Uma perfeita introdução a música dos caras é "Sanctuary+", trabalho que reúne os EPs deles. Pós punk cru, ríspido, sem firulas, indo diretamente na ferida, e se ela não existe ainda, certamente vai ser aberta.

Pense num Wedding Present sombrio, assim poderia ser descrito o Silent Forum.

Q. When and how did Silent Forum begin?
We met through the internet 5 years ago and have been very close ever since! We were initially a fun indie rock band called How I Faked The Moon Landing before settling on a slightly darker tone.

Q: Who are your influences?
There's a real range, each member pulls from a different place including: Pavement, The Smiths, Everything Everything, Warpaint, Interpol.

Q. What are your 5 favourite albums?

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It depends on the room. Yesterday we played a DIY gig in a tiny room and there was a tremendous energy and warmth (both literal and emotinal) from the audience. Richard (the singer) is very much a "full body" performer, he can sometimes feel quite sick on stage because he does a lot of dancing/jerking about and drinking beer.

Q. How would you describe Silent Forum's sound?
Dark Indie music with elements of Goth and Post Punk.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording your new EP?
Sanctuary was recorded in Stubbington, England - a tiny village where the producer has a recording set up on the top floor of his house. It was quite strange to record such an intense record in a quiet and peaceful area. A lot of people move to Stubbington to retire.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Iglooghost, Jadu Heart, People Like You, Bonzai and Girlpool (kinda new),

Q: Is there a song you would you love to make a cover version of?
Arthur Russell - This is How We Walk on the Moon. That song is addictive, working out how to do it justice would be hell. YouTube that song if you get a chance - its a glorious, perfect song.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
AT the moment we are really focusing on writing as much new material as possible as we're recording an album next year. Its going to be surprsingly poppy - we are looking forward to subverting people's expectations.

Need The Sun with The Medicine - An Interview

Primeiramente, não confundir com o Medicine, banda mais do que seminal, do gênio Brad Laner.

Feito o devido aviso, adentraremos ao mundo do duo japonês, The Medicine. Formado em Osaka no ano passado, com dois EPS no currículo, "Trip" de 2016 e "Need The Sun" deste ano, mas os pontos altos da curta trajetória do casal são "Flashback" e "Clumsy", algo entre os ensinamentos de Kevin Shields e os heróis do alt rock japonês The Novembers.

Indie rock com sabores gazers ou vice e versa, vale acompanhar os próximos passos do The Medicine.

Q When did The Medicine start? Tell us about the history...
The Medicine formed in Osaka in 2016. Members met at the university. Our 1st ep “Trip” released in 2016. Thereafter we started live activity mainly in Osaka. 2nd ep “need the sun” released in August 2017, and organized a release party with the dress code of black clothes. In October 2017, drummer Toyoda withdrew from the band. we greeted the support drum in the band. Current members are Masaya Taniguchi (vocal, guitar) and Ryunosuke Tokuyama (bass). In November 2017, a cassette single "POSE" released from HANDS AND MOMENT by XTAL PARTICLE.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Masaya : I want to see chaos from the stage it is an audience's chaos. I'll love that whirlpool...

Q. How do you describe The Medicine sounds?
Masaya : Drifting to daydream.

Ryunosuke : Shoegaze.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Basically I make songs and lyrics, then arrangement with the band.

However, when we recorded "POSE", we had a show the day before, It night was a very exciting ...So we were in a very crazy state. Next morning we headed to the studio. Anyway, I remember playing that recording incredibly crazy.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Our favorite band called Chastity. It's remind an underground grunge scene of the 90s. I think their sound are perfectly new age alternative rock. Their riffs are really dope!

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Masaya : We are planning to working for a new album. It completion will be in around next fall. and We'd like to get the opportunity to play more performance. Because we'd like to more people to know our music. and I hope that all over the world enjoy with our music, not only Japan.

Haze with Dayzed - An Interview

Entra mês, sai mês e a avalanche de novidades australianas permanece em alta no TBTCI, talvez seja algo que existe na água de lá, talvez, quem sabe....

Desta vez quem comanda os sonhos é o quinteto Dayzed, e seu mais novo trabalho, o EP, "Haze". Uma peça suave, tranquilizante e, claro, sonhadora, com toques de psicodelismo meditativo. Alguns momentos as guitarras gritam um pouco mais, mas, o que comanda o disco é sua beleza envolventemente hipnótica.

Q. When did Dayzed start? Tell us about the history...
Dayzed started in 2014, I was living with my parents and had a lot of spare time over the summer holidays. I had just bought a microphone and a recording interface and was playing around with recording and overdubbing and eventually through that wrote some songs and got together with my friends Max and Adrian and we started playing gigs around our home town and Melbourne.

Q: Who are your influences?
I love heaps of 80’s and 90’s shoegaze stuff like Slowdive, MBV, Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins. Also some older 60’s bands like The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground. Some more recent influences would be Beach Fossils, Tame Impala and Best Coast.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Yeah playing shows is always heaps of fun!

Q. How do you describe Dayzed sounds?
Washed out, beachy, dream pop songs.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I kind of write the songs as I record them. I usually start with a guitar line or a couple of guitar parts and from that just start experimenting with layering synths and bass and drums and whatever else. Then I just re-record parts if needed and mix it as I go. Vocals are usually done last, I then either write lyrics for the song or fit some lyrics in that I already have. It's all mainly recorded at my house.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Check out Hollywood Real Thoughts, Tram Cops, Mosaicz, Sagamore and Eddy Dillon.

Also the new Beaches album is sick!

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We do a GL cover which is pretty fun. I dunno maybe a sonic youth or spacemen 3 song could be fun to cover.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We’re taking a break over December cause a few of us are travelling. We’ll be back to play at Tanglewood Music Festival in Victoria on New Years Eve and then hopefully more shows and more recording.

The Directory with Silent Runners - An Interview

Há algumas horas atrás veio ao mundo "The Directory", primeiro álbum dos holandeses do Silent Runners.

Pós punk linhagem clássica, evocando baluartes como The Sound, Comsat Angels, Depeche Mode e muito outros. Comandando pelo baixo característico, synths marcantes e a voz angustiante, tipicamente feita sob medida para canções soturnas, densas e com um direcionamento mais do que melancólico.

Nada de novo, e quem foi que disse que se faz necessário novidade, o que queremos é música que inspira, e o Silent Runners criou uma perfeita atmosfera retro, se é que vocês me entendem.

Recomenda-se para ouvir alto e dançar em qualquer clube, noite adentro.

Q. When did Silent Runners start? Tell us about the history...
Even though Silent Runner is only a few years old (2014), our band members have a long history together. Drummer Frank and singer Dolf played together since the start of high school (the metal years). Stanley, the guitarist, started playing with them around 10 years ago. A few years before bass player Jan joined. In all those years we made quite some different music, from electro trip-hop to symphonic pop/rock. But in the end we always loved the dark 80’s synth sound. After our last band ‘broke up’, we wanted something new. Most of all we wanted to make music that would lead to energetic live shows. We experimented with 80’s synth music for a while, until we found our current sound. That’s when our key player Joep joined. Since then, we are Silent Runners.

Q: Who are your influences?
It’s a hard question. We all love new wave and post punk, but we all have pretty broad and different musical interests. Ranging from hip-hop to folk, Timber Timbre to Radiohead. Of course we can’t deny that we look up to the big names such as Joy Division, Depeche Mode and new bands such as The Soft Moon, Cold Showers, etc. but we always try to stretch the boundaries of the genre in one way or another. We play with familiar sounds and add something new to it. To keep it fun for ourselves, but also to surprise the audience. On our latest album The Directory you hear a lot of different influences, ranging from krautrock to techno. You’ll even find traditional Japanese drums on the records. Some of our rhythms have a groove that isn’t necessarily new-wave or post-punk. We just mix and match until it feels right.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Before we got into a big fight over best albums of all time, we decided everyone could just name one album for the list.
We could easily name 25 or more albums. Nevertheless, these 5 are great:
The Sound – From the Lion’s Mouth (1981)
Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures (1979)
Radiohead – Kid A (2000)
Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run (1975)
Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense (1984)

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Silent Runners is a real live band. We love writing the songs and recording the records, but in the end the thing that really makes us happy is to perform for an audience. For us, a good Silent Runners show is a bit unpredictable and sometimes chaotic. We need drive and energy on stage.

Q. How do you describe Silent Runners sounds?
Neon night clubs and factory floors, mixed with a lot of reverb and drive. You can describe our sound as dark, but it’s not necessarily depressing. Sometimes a song can be even darker if you mix it with some sparks of light. On the new album you’ll find quite some different tracks, even though the vocals, synth and guitar sounds bring it all together.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The EP (2015) was written during rehearsals. We just play together until we hear something interesting. Then we build on that. We make a habit of recording every little idea, so we can later come back to it. Our album The Directory was written in the studio, without actually playing the songs live. The songs are more composed that way. That means you have a lot of time to work on the details and sound, but capturing the live feel is a bigger challenge. Our next work will probably be another ‘rehearsal’ space record.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
There’s a lot of great music around! Some bands: Whispering Sons, Thalamus, Joseph of Mercury, U.S. Girls, Amnesia Scanner, Promiseland (not to be confused with Promise Land, the Christian metal band).

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We like to make covers of songs that don’t originally fit in our genre. Then we can change the sound of the song and just pick a few interesting elements from the original that we want to use. For example, with our last band we covered Slow by Kylie Minogue. We still have to find the right song to cover with Silent Runners…

Q: What are your plans for the future?
To crush our enemies. To see them driven before us and hear the lamentation of their women. And play lots of shows.

Sunspots with All Sparks Burn Out - An Interview

O submundo dos bons sons, é um lugar de certo pequeno, onde quase todos se conhecem, ou conhecem alguém que conhece você, ou vice e versa, e foi assim que tomei conhecimento dos australianos sônicos do All Sparks Burn Out.

A amiga, conhecedora dos bons sons, Breda Massman, publicou há menos de uma semana atrás uma banda com um nome que me chamou atenção de imediato, All Sparks Burn Out, nome de uma música do primeiro trabalho dos ingleses do Editors, e como curioso que sou, fui diretamente para a audição, e pow!!

Uma tapa na cara, uma chinelada nos tímpanos foi o que aconteceu desde os primeiros momentos de "Sunspots" música que abre e dá título ao primeiro trabalho dos caras. Um esporro electro noise, nos moldes de um Screen Vinyl Image cruzando com violência com o APTBS. Na sequência a eletrônica pesada toma conta de "The Trees They Sway", uma trip ácida guiada por synths, loops em alta tensão, e "Daysend" fecha violentamente o trabalho evocando Killing Joke e Skywave lado a lado.

Fora tudo isso, os caras do All Sparks Burn Out, são velhos conhecidos do TBTCI, Ant e Dave são membros do Skullsquadron, ou seja, tudo em casa mesmo.

Mas diferentemente das bandas originais, o All Sparks Burn Out é música para deixar cicatrizes abertas, intenso e frenético, como deve ser.

***** Interview with All Sparks Burn Out *****

Q. When did All Sparks Burn Out start? Tell us about the history...
I love Sounds Like Sunset, particularly their Invisible album (2005) in which Anthony The had a hand in recording/engineering/mixing the album. I got in touch with him when in a Sydney band called apianLOW to see if he would be interested in working with the us but the band finished up as the boys were already doing it for 10 years and wanted a break.

I still kept in touch with Anthony, sent some demos that’d I’d been doing in the shed at home between 2006-2008 and he said he’d be happy to record them. I then chased up Simon Cox, I loved his drumming in Australian band Died Pretty (notably their Using My Gills As a Roadmap album 1998).

We recorded the first EP 'Exactly What It Sounds Like' in early 2009. After it was finished Anthony joined on guitar.

Spent a few years piecing together the second EP 'Red Sky At Night' but wanted to add vocals to a few tracks so got in touch with Rachel Staggs from Austin band Experimental Aircraft to see if she could do some work. We were pretty lucky to have her sing on 3 tracks. It was released 2012.

As we’re a fairly part-time band the recording process for the next 5 years has morphed from an EP, to an Album to a debut double album! Guess it’s our sense of humour that we’re pretty unknown and yet we’re going to have a double album to kick us off. Anthony’s brother David has added some guitars as well and we have a host of guest vocalists helping out.

Our first single Sunspots from the album ‘Shapes In The Shadows’ is out and about now.

Q. Who are your influences?
I guess we have different influences from an individual point of view but collectively we love a lot of the 90’s bands. My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Swirlies, Ride, Catherine Wheel, Curve, Underground Lovers, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Whipping Boy, Therapy?, Compulsion, Starflyer 59, Ammonia, Big Heavy Stuff, Doughboys, Nirvana, Failure, Sugar, Chapterhouse, Sleater-Kinney, Jesus Jones, Yo La Tengo, James, Sugar, Pavement, JAMC, Screamfeeder, Placebo.

Earlier bands like Killing Joke, New Order and Joy Division also pretty up there. Bands outside the 90s; Sounds Like Sunset, Interpol, Editors (our band name comes from their All Sparks track), A Perfect Circle, New Pornographers, Mew, The Go! Team, Pia Fraus, Cheatahs and Amusement Parks On Fire.

The second disc for our album incorporates the above bands with electronic artists like Leftfield, Chemical Brothers, Paul Van Dyk, Nick Fish, Severed Heads, Southend, Pop Will Eat Itself, Deadmau5, Orbital, Cut Copy, Presets.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Now this is tough - trying to think of the other boys as well, could have gone with MBV’s ‘Isn’t Anything’, The Go! Team’s ‘The Scene Between’, Ride’s ‘Nowhere’, Amusement Parks On Fire ‘Out of the Angeles’, Underground Lovers ‘Leaves Me Blind’ or Failure’s ‘Fantastic Planet’ but would probably go with;

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We haven’t played live yet! We’ve rehearsed a lot over the years but as we’re fairly part time and I live about 2 hours away from the others makes it trickier, so it’s something we’ve put aside to concentrate on recording. We’re looking to change that in 2018 to help promote the album.

We’ve all played live in other bands; Anthony with Ides of Space and Skullsquadron, Dave with Ides of Space, Line Drawings and Skullsquadron, Simon with Died Pretty and Tumbleweed and myself with lekkerding and apianLOW.

The 3rd track on our single Daysend (via bandcamp) is with one mic through one track on a 4 track tape recorder and gives an idea of what we’re like live (a bit raw!). We’ll have vocals for the upcoming gigs as well as incorporate some of the samples/loops that have come about on the album.

There will be nerves when we do gig but excited to play these songs in front of people.

Q. How do you describe All Sparks Burn Out sounds?
We like the wall of noise thing but are always looking to add melody in there as well. I think a lot of our songs stem from good/interesting drums patterns and build from there. Pretty keen not to have a too perfect clean sound, really like the feeling distortion/fuzz/feedback can give, like a big warm blanket to wrap up in.

The first EP was let it all go and turn it to 11 but we’re slowly refining our sound without hopefully losing the interest and power.

Q. Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
For the upcoming album we’ve done a mix of studio/rehearse with all of us playing together as well as developing songs from loops and overdubs at home. I use Ableton and have written a lot of the material on it. Anthony records our sessions in a studio with Pro Tools. I’ll go away and work on things then bring the stems across and then we mix and add some more in Pro Tools.

Simon also recorded a series of drum loops in the studio that I then took away and worked on and fleshed them out into songs. From memory we had two or three small studio sessions as a band and mostly getting Simon's drum tracks down. Most of the time I'll bring some ideas in and let the boys add their own style while a few came about from jams.

The time taken (over 5 years) has made these tracks evolve. I think sometimes you could keep refining them till the end of time but for the album it’s actually worked in our favour. It’s given time to get them right. When we listen back to the earlier versions we feel that we’ve made progress.

All the vocals have come about towards the end where we've sent out pre-mix or mixed versions to see if anyone is interested. Luckily we've had Rachel Staggs from Experimental Aircraft, Pat Haid (Ides of Space/Line Drawings/Key Out), Greg Atkinson (Big Heavy Stuff/Ups & Downs), Kelly Hanlon (Terra Pines/DEAFCULT), Chris Dubrow (Insurge), Kate Halcrow (friend who sings in local jazz bands), Jasmine Yee (Halogen) work with us.

For the final album mix we ran through a vintage Neve 8026 console that Aussie music producer guru Wayne Connelly has at Turning Studios.

As mentioned earlier, initially it was going to be an EP (with our current single a part of that). As I was arranging more tracks at home it started to grow to an album.

I loved the double album concept that UK band James did with Brian Eno for Laid/Wah Wah. Recording the main album then doing more experimental stuff from the second album next door.

This process ended up being something similar where I was looking to do more beats/noise/darker stuff in downtime but thought it still had a tie to the main album so why not release them together.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
There are so many awesome bands out there, it’s amazing. Some of the bands in our influences or we like are releasing new stuff which is cool; Swervedriver, Jesus Jones, Nine Inch Nails, Slowdive, Screamfeeder, Pia Fraus, Underground Lovers, Failure, The Bats.

For new bands though, we’ll give ourselves a bit of artistic license and can include bands that have been around for a little while as well as the new.

Q. Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I think we have a different idea on what songs we’d like to to cover in a live setting as opposed to recording. Live we’d be happy to stay fairly true to the original and just have that extra feedback while recording we’d want to make it a bit different without losing elements of the original.

Live we’d like to knock out tracks like ‘Perfume V’ by Pavement, ‘Another Space Song’ by Failure, ‘Shoot Speed/Kill Light’ by Primal Scream, ‘Android Dreams’ by Mega City Four or Outskirts of Me’ by Pia Fraus or 'Honest Joe' by James.

Recording-wise, something like ‘Solaris’ by Failure, Catherine Wheel’s ‘Tongue Twisted’, Swirlies ‘Bell’ or ‘Sterling Moss’, ‘Like a Daydream’ by Ride or Curve’s ‘Recovery’, something from Whipping Boy’s ‘Heartworm’ Album or 'You Are Invited' by Dismemberment Plan.

Q. What are your plans for the future?
Just released our first single ‘Sunspots’ (Greg Atkinson on vocals (Big Heavy Stuff/Ups & Downs)). We’ll have another single ‘Seconds Like Days’ in January 2018 featuring Kelly Hanlon (Terra Pines/DEAFCULT) on vocals. A 3rd single will be from the second album ‘Never Question Why?’ featuring Chris Dubrow from Insurge on vocals and a 4th single ‘Trip Over Traps’ featuring Jasmine Yee from Halogen after the album release. They’ll all be released digitally with extra tracks and alternative versions of other songs and b-sides.

We’re pretty excited by our debut album. It will hopefully come out around March/April 2018. Just have to get it mastered and a few tweaks to the second disc. Also look to do a few shows with that.

Спор with The Jossers - An Interview

Para quem acompanha as páginas do TBTCI, já deve estar acostumado a costumeiras aparições de representandos russos e ucranianos, independentemente do estilo, seja shoegaze, dreampop, psych ou pós punk, é fato que existe uma ebulição sonora por aqueles lados, aliás, no mundo todo, é só uma questão de abrir os olhos e ouvidos.

Desta a bola da vez, é o trio ucraniano, The Jossers, que desde 2011 vem trilhando os árduos caminhos do submundo dos bons sons.

Quando do primeiro EP, "T-Shit" de 2014, passando por, “Sprookjesteam”, também de 2014, e o debute “Unsupported Bravery of Local Kids”, os caras trilhavam uma certa sonoridade onde a influência da dissonância dos Pixies era notadamente existente, mas como os caras mesmo citam na entrevista, o novo trabalho "Спор”, é um novo rumo no direcionamento sonoro do The Jossers, deixando aquele ar pixiano de lado e mergulhando por entre experimentos psicodélicos e idiossincrasias pós punk tortas, além do fato de terem abandonado o inglês o trocando pelo idioma russo.

Esquisito, coeso e instigante, assim é "Спор”, o EP, e nessa o The Jossers deu um salto para o futuro, aguardemos.

Q. When did The Jossers start? Tell us about the history...
We’ve been playing together since 2011. Peter, Vlad and I were studying at school so The Jossers was kind of a school punk rock band. Vlad was only 13 years old and I think that made him the youngest performing musician in our town called Kalush in Ukraine. However, The Jossers first gig was in 2014. We presented ourselves to local punk scene which was mostly filled with screamo/hardcore bands and played our debut EP “T-Shit”. What a shitty gig that was :)

Since that time we've released “T-Shit” EP (2014), “Sprookjesteam” bootleg (2014), debut LP “Unsupported Bravery of Local Kids” (2016) and its live version “Unsupported Bravery of Local Gigs” (2017). Recently The Jossers have changed name to Зэ Джозерс (which sounds the same as The Jossers in English). So it's a new phase for us cause we've released one first song in Russian on “Спор” (Odds) EP and now we're watching the feedback. It’s a very funny thing because guys and I weren't listening to post-soviet music even like a year ago and now we are thinking of recording an album in Russian. Haven't decided yet. It's interesting to work with new phonetics, writing English songs was much easier.

Q. Who are your influences?
We've started as a punk-rock band and now The Jossers is a subgenre experiment. Through these years we've been into classic punk-rock shit like Ramones, or Misfits, then, you know, Nirvana. And when Peter and I started universities, he discovered DEVO, I discovered new-wave and post-punk and things had changed. I can drop some big names in music but I think we've listened to huge amount of major and underrated shit released since 1980 (maybe even earlier). One genre that is still a bit not well understood is metal. I don't know why people like it. Though I listen to Neurosis, but only once a month.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It's not happening often, but we blew the scene out every time. And it sounds dirty and crazy and “not right” in classic sense of a rock-band gig. We change tempo, rhythms, versions, trying to make every gig special at least for us. I'm drumming and singing so for me an hour gig is like climbing mountains all day. Feeling tired, you know. No after parties with The Jossers at all. Mostly.

I feel really happy onstage and appreciate fans that give a damn for what we're doing as artists while performing.

Q. How do you describe The Jossers sounds?
Every time we drop a new release someone says “You sound like Pixies”. Yeah, cause Peter (guitarist) is fond of dissonances. Though in “Спор” EP we are really into epic song structures and arrangements, though living some space for psychedelic noises and guitar parts. But it's post-punk in its core. No more Pixies reference this time :)

Q. Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Year ago I discovered Garageband, bought iRig and now I'm recording every DEMO on my phone. That's very useful. It's easier to write arrangements and additional stuff. Then I bring my demos to rehearsal, and we polish it to final versions of structures, instrumental and vocal parts.

After all that (it's usually few months) we go to the studio (SoundPlant in Kiev) and record everything. Nothing really inspiring and “rock-n-roll”-ish about that. It's our job after all. We do care about how our music sounds. That’s why I call SoundPlant my second home in times of recording our albums.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend
I'‘ve been, listening to Ukrainian and Russian indie-scene for a while and I would be a fool not to name some good bands from out here. Oh, deer! – the best local screamo band I know. They ended their activity recently and released their last album “How to Stop Worrying and Love the War”. Nikita Ogurtsov and his project Phooey! is the most underrated artist in Ukraine. He ended Phooey! last year, and we decided to record a cover-version of his song Зря for “Спор”. We love him, hope he's doing well in France right now. Russian new-wave post punk is mostly a shit thing to listen to, though I like Буерак and their recent album Скромные Апартаменты is a huge step for them in songwriting.

And some more local bands and artists: Shortparis, Пасош, Спасибо, Свидание, Мы, Small Depo, Yah, Battle Axe Culture, Sasha Boole, Stoned Jesus (think you know this stoner-trio).

Q. Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
We've always had a cover song in our setlists. Our best is I Love You All originally by Soronprfbs (from “Frank” movie). It is released on “Unsupported Bravery of Local Gigs” (2017). For now, we want Neutral Milk Hotel — The King of Carrot Flowers (Pts.2-3) to be in a setlist. Not just for I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST thing. It's a very powerful hymn song for me.

Q. What are your plans for the future?
We've released “Спор” EP and a music video for “Давай Еще Раз” recently. But we're ready to record our first as Зэ Джозерс full length (and second for The Jossers, you know). Hope it will be done till spring 2018. Then we'll go on tour, we haven't been performing at all for a while. Really want to see people in front of a stage again.

Q. Any parting words?
There are lots of bands outside Spotify “Discover Weekly”. Especially here, in post-soviet countries. Our reality sucks, we are stuck in time and crisis is a word that fully describe the way we live. And it affects everyone, especially artists. Today I can see the wave of post-modern, absurd and ironic arts here, not only in music. And that's a pleasure to be a part of this process.

Primrose Path with Luxury - An Interview

Antes de mais nada, um aviso, não confundir o Luxury que iremos abordar, com um outro Luxury que pratica um dreampop gazer, o Luxury aqui é de Newcastle e passeia por outros rumos sonoros, mais densos, caóticos e insanos.

O Luxury inglês, é um mix de pós punk com um toque requintado dos primeiros anos do Horrors, ou pra ser mais exato, um Gun Club dos nossos tempos. Dois singles no currículo, mesmo porque os caras tem menos de dois anos de atividade, mas, ambos singles são peças preciosas de angústia e desconforto.

Esqueça a melancolia clássica do pós punk, com o Luxury, ela dá espaço ao desespero....escute alto.

Q. When did Luxury start? Tell us about the history...
Luxury as it is now has been a band for just over a year and a half. We were playing music together beforehand but the band didn’t really come together until Aaron joined on vocals. Before that we played in hardcore bands and then started something that sounded a bit like Fucked Up which never really materialised.

Q: Who are your influences?
I always try and avoid this question because like every band our influences are always changing as we progress. Before we started writing the first bunch of songs we talked a lot about Protomartyr, Iceage, Institute, Eagulls and Total Control or older bands like Wire and Crisis. People often compare us to those bands as well as Joy Division, The Cure and a handful more which I reckon is pretty sound, we just don’t want to be an exact copy.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It’s good fun, I guess it just shows a band for what they really are. It helps us understand what works and what doesn’t when it comes to getting back in the practice space and writing new tunes.

Q. How do you describe Luxury sounds?
Anxious, pissed off and gloomy, something like Pink Flag era Wire playing The Cure’s Pornography.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We recorded the new songs with Chris McManus at Blank Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne. We’ve known Maccas for years through playing in various bands and we spent two and a bit days with him recording and mixing the tunes. I usually hate recording but this time round it was pretty chill and we spent time discussing and focusing on how we wanted everything to sound.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Two decent Newcastle upon Tyne local bands are New Horror and Lost On Me, Matty from Chain of Flowers is doing a new band called Night Thoughts, my pal Sam plays in Revenue from London, Publique and Death Bells are in Australia - anything Burning Rose Records is putting out.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Something really British and obnoxious like Stone Roses or Oasis.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We want to play more out of town shows and work on a full length record.

Sestra with Percolator - An Interview

Quando algo como o trio irlandês Percolator cruza seus tímpanos, é basicamente impossível ficar imune, não há meio termo, ou a pessoa simplesmente os detesta, ou, ao contrário, os caras tornam-se verdadeiros prediletos instantâneos, o TBTCI fica na segunda opção.

Uma esquizofrênica mistura de um certo pós punk bebendo na no wave, ou um art noise com cheiro krautiano, o adjetivo shoegaze, utilizado vez ou outra por algumas publicações acerca doo Percolator soa até engraçado, porque de shoegaze os caras não tem nada, talvez apenas os pedais hahahahaha.

"Sestra", o primeiro álbum dos caras, é esquisito, soa fora dos padrões normais, não se encaixa em basicamente nada, mas conforme os oito experimentos do disco vão passando, é inegável que o Percolator transcende gêneros, não a toa os caras já tocaram com gente do porte de NEU!, APTBS e This Heat, só pra citar algumas conexões na sonoridade dos caras.

"Sestra" e o Percolator são intrinsecamente freaks e viciantes.

Q. When did Percolator start? Tell us about the history...
As the name may suggest, our water at 92 degrees Celsius filters slowly through a fine dark silt until a dripping gold-black emulsion is extracted. This enriches the morning time in our souls. forming our group, the sounds that we have come to make and unifies all of our personalities through musical expression. It has been a long process. Starting in 2007 when there were just 2, (Ian and Ellie), we went through several line-up changes, the sound changing and developing each time, until the unity was complete in 2012 when Spud joined.

Q: Who are your influences?
Anyone who is forward thinking in their approach to making music.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We feel like Norse Gods, liberating the minds of the people. Those who once thought that all was well, we are freeing them from their repetitive day to day tasks and giroscope shopping sprees.
We love playing live. We didnt play as often as we would've liked before we released the album so this year has been liberating. It's been interesting to manipulate the songs from the album as a 3 -piece and make it work.

Q. How do you describe Percolator sounds?
We are very particular about our sounds. We understand the importance of creating space by being minimal and repetitive in our playing

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We are lucky to have our own studio in which to tease out ideas that eventually form very long ideas that eventually form moderate length songs. It is a very long process.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
This Heat - Horizontal Hold (Peel session version)

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We'll start recording new material this month with the plan of releasing an EP or an album, in mid to late 2018.

We are currently planning an EU tour for early 2018 which will take us through France, Germany, Holland and Poland, and more hopefully.

Designs In Rhythm with Ice Choir - An Interview

Aos iniciados e conhecedores do submundo dos bons sons, o nome Kurt Feldman soará mais do que familiar, afinal o cara já passeou por The Pains of Being Pure At Heart e principalmente e essencialmente escreveu seu nome no ambiente alternativo sob a alcunha de The Depreciation Guild.

Mas no meio disso tudo, desde 2012 ele vem criando ao lado de comparsas peças que remetem diretamente a uma cena certa New Romantic oitentista, leia-se Talk Talk, Japan, Associates, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears entre outros, ou pop viciante comandado por synths e altamente cantarolável. 

Assim é o Ice Choir, e para apreciadores se faz mais do que necessário a audição contínua de "Designs In Rhythm", um disco que te teletransporta para um tempo onde o glamour era uma questão de estilo e atitude.

Q. When did Ice Choir start? Tell us about the history...
Before Ice Choir I was writing music for another band called Depreciation Guild. Towards the end of 2010 i was getting pretty bored with that project, so i wrote some tracks that didn't really sound like that band. Those became the first Ice Choir songs.

Q: Who are your influences?
This changes all the time, but in general, see below.

It's occasionally fun when things don't go wrong, but I'm definitely not a good performer or singer so i'm always reluctant to play shows. I really only ever perform live when my friends' bands ask us to open for them.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
I generally start by putting a bunch of midi bullshit into the computer and then i plug my guitar in sometimes and record that too.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
There's a lot of really clever and inspiring stuff coming out on Orange Milk...Giant Claw, death's dynamic shroud.wmv, Bataille Solaire, etc. As for contemporary artists that aren't necessarily "new" but have put out good stuff recently... Lindstrøm, Actress, Sondre Lerche, Trailer Trash Tracys, Ariel Pink

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I can't think of any covers i've ever enjoyed more than the original.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
I might release some music at some point, right now i'm not writing music.

Okay with Wy - An Interview

O duo sueco Ebba e Michel ou se você preferir, e deve, Wy, debutaram no final de outubro com um álbum absolutamente envolvente, evocando Portishead, Angel Olsen e Majical Cloudz.

Com o singelo título de "Okay", o álbum transpira uma certa nostalgia, uma doce saudade parecesse pairar sobre as canções. Talvez seja pela entonação vocal de Ebba, talvez pela instrumentação épica, talvez, simplesmente porque, o Wy soa eloquentemente grandioso.

O Wy, é um verdadeiro colírio para mente.

Q. When did Wy start? Tell us about the history...
We met in 2009 and were both really into playing music. We have had multiple bands but Wy started in 2015 when we moved to Malmö together. We recorded “In Bloom” in our first apartment and then we just kind of left it lying. When we moved to Stockholm in 2016 Ebba had an internship at a major record label and that kind of inspired us to write more songs so we started writing our EP. In about a month we were signed to an indie label and released our first single.

Q: Who are your influences?
We listen to a lot of emo, pop and singer-songwriters. We’re both most inspired by artists who can evoke a feeling, like Foxing, Angel Olsen and Majical Cloudz.

Even though we’re mostly a great team we prefer to work separately from the start of a song. First we have to give each other time to add what we want, usually it’s drums and guitar for Michel and vocals for Ebba. When we have figured out the gist of the song we sit down together with it.
