Sometimes Summertime with Crystal Canyon - An Interview

***** Interview with Crystal Canyon *****

Q. When did Crystal Canyon begin? Tell us about the history...
L: About three years ago now. I went into Todd's studio to record my other band. We hit it off and he heard me sing harmonies.

It was then that he asked me to form a band with him. He sent me some ideas and we started collaborating. He had already known

Jeremey and Hayes (rhythm section) so we all got together and started playing! We rehearsed and wrote one full year before we played live.

Q: Who are your influences?
L: 90's girl rock, The Smiths, A.C. Marias, Beth Thompson,Joni Mitchell, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Black Metal, Morton Subotnick, Astrud Gilberto

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
L: That's impossible! Here are a few we like currently:
Goat by The Jesus Lizard,
The Buried Life, by Medicine,
Tender Prey by Nick Cave,
The Cardigans, Gran Turismo,
Pink Flag by Wire

Q. How do you feel playing live?
L: We love it but we're pretty picky about shows because we have so much equipment that we have to bring. Especially Todd, our pedal boards will rival anybody else's, haha!

Q. How do you describe Crystal Canyon sounds?
L: A dream, within a dream, within a dream. Layers, sounds, lullabies.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
L: One of us will bring an idea in. I have brought in full songs and lyrics, Todd brings in the music, we all collaborate on it to make it unique.Todd has a studio here in Portland called Acadia. We record all songs there. It is a long and tedious process but the outcome has been amazing and really rewarding for all of us.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
L: Carla dal Forno, Julianna Barwick

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
L: The Monkees: Porpoise Song or anything off Head.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
L: Record a new record, maybe some touring, we'd love to play festivals and ATP shows. Bring us to Brazil! :)

Q: Any parting words?
L: Check us out here: www.crystalcanyonband.com Thanks Renato!
